why beauty is relative

Before I start working on anything else, there was this video that I watched, where a group of Korean men and women were asked their opinion on specific Filipino celebrities, and to tell the audience what their impression of them was. There are two things that I want to emphasize based on this video: (1) is that different people from different cultural ethnic backgrounds have their own form of beauty and that (2) people tend to find people from the same ethnic background to be the prettier/more beautiful ones. The video exemplifies these two points.

The Koreans were shown three women and one men, and were asked their opinion out of all of them. The first three women, they all agreed, had Western features and looked more mature or older than they really were. Another observation they had was that most of the people who were shown were shorter than they were. They also mentioned that the people who looked more Western, they deduced were of mixed race. I thought that it was really interesting that they initially used western and asian features as a comparison of the people they saw. The one male that they were shown, received mixed opinions – some thought he was okay, and some thought he was cute. The Korean guy was had more or less no comment regarding the guy. The last female they showed, they all agreed was the prettiest and had more of the Asian features similar to theirs.

The funny thing was, when I was watching this video, there was one girl who kept on talking about the girls were pretty but didn’t have the Korean features that she was looking for. Well of course, they’re not Koreans are they? But they all did agree that the last girl was the prettiest – who if I didn’t know any better, or didn’t know her name at all, would have completely thought was Korean. This just really brings to life the old adage that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Only in this case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder with similar features as theirs.
